Tell About a Story.pdf
A: Here are a few ideas:
- Ask your child to go on a picture walk and tell you what they think will happen in the story before you read it. Ask them questions like "why do you think so?" or "what else could it be?"
- As you read, ask your child questions like "why did the character do that?" or "what's going to happen next?"
- Ask, "If you could add one more page to the story (or change a part) what would it be?
- Ask if your child can make a connection: does the book remind you of another book you've read before or does it remind you of something that has happened to you? Which part? Why? How?
- After you read, ask your child to tell you what happened in the beginning, middle and end. Ask them if they liked the story or if there is something they would change if they were the author. Ask them to tell you who the characters were and where the story took place.
- Look up information about the author to see if he/she wrote similar stories.
- Complete a web like one of these: http://my.hrw.com/nsmedia/intgos/html/igo.htm
- Have your child hunt for familiar words within the text or letters that are in their name or that we're working on in school.
- See if your child can sound out a difficult word or look for blends & digraphs within the print like "ch", "sh", "fr", etc.
- Have your child draw their favorite part of the story and write a sentence about it.
- Read in a funny voice (alien, monster, diva, etc)
- Act out the story.
- Read each character's part in a different voice.
- Read the book at normal speed, then read it again super fast, then turtle slow.
- Find words you didn't know and use a strategy to help you read them.
- Find a word you've learned. How many times is that word in the book?
- Play a rhyming game or syllable game with words in the book.
- Play a game outside (catch, hopscotch, jump rope, etc) while spelling sight words from the book.
- Write about what you read by answering questions like...
- "My favorite part of today's reading was..."
- "The author's purpose of today's reading was...(to inform, to entertain, to persuade) I know this because..."
- "In the beginning...In the middle...At the end..."
- "The main idea of the story is...Details are..."
- "I can summarize today's reading in 4 sentence. 1) main idea 2) beginning 3) middle 4) end"
- "This book reminds me of something in my life because..."
- Draw the setting, characters, problem & solution
