ABC's of Kindergarten
A- Attendance is vital to your child’s success. If your child is absent, please call the attendance secretary at 428-2200 or send a doctor’s note the next day. Also, refer to the RRISD Handbook for the district’s policy for more information.
Arrival: Our campus opens at 7:15 and breakfast can be purchased in the cafeteria. The front door to the building is open for walkers and bus riders; car riders may be dropped off at cafeteria doors. As students arrive, they will sit in the cafeteria by grade level. At 7:35, the teacher will take students to their classrooms. If your child enters the classroom before 7:40, he/she will be eligible for Perfect Attendance at the end of each 9 weeks.
Academics: To learn more about what kinder students in RRISD will learn, visit https://www.roundrockisd.org/departments/elementary-education/
B- Backpacks: Please send a backpack with your child every day. They should be large enough to hold an 8 ½ x 11” binder or folder along with other items as needed through the year. Please refrain from backpacks with wheels.
Birthdays: Check with your child’s teacher to make arrangements first. If you want to distribute private party invitations to classmates during the school day, it is RRISD policy that every child in our class gets an invitation. Otherwise, you have to mail them or hand-deliver them after school hours to avoid hurt feelings.
C- Communication: This is the key to a successful year. Please don’t hesitate to call or email the teacher if you have questions or concerns as the year goes along. Kindergarten teacher’s planning time is between 9:30-10:20. This time is set aside for meetings, conferences and it is usually when we check email and phone messages. If you would like us to return your call, please provide a local Austin phone number. Our main form of communication is our Thursday folder and Friday Conduct folder. Please check the contents each week for important school notices, homework assignments, behavior progress and completed work for you to keep at home. You may send any notes in the Thursday folder, as well as lunch money or book orders.
Cafeteria: Breakfast and lunch can be paid directly to the cafeteria or you may send money at the beginning of the week or month to ensure proper credit is applied to your child’s account. An online payment option https://foodservices.roundrockisd.org/online-payments/ and a menu can be accessed by visiting: https://roundrockisd.org/departments/food-services/menus/ Please send a doctor’s note with your child about any food or milk allergies; and a note explaining any religious dietary restrictions. Your child is ultimately responsible for regulating their food intake, but the campus staff will do our best to help monitor their choices. Kindergarteners are not allowed to purchase extra snacks, treats, or ice cream during lunch. If you would like for your child to purchase a snack at school, it must be done in the morning before the bell rings.
Choice Workshop: Kindergarten students will experience an opportunity to be the facilitator of their own learning while teachers assist, guide and question students to further their problem-solving, social and academic skills in a risk-free setting.
D- Dismissal: Kindergarteners will be dismissed starting at 2:40 at the school designated areas for Bus Riders, Car Riders, YMCA, Daycare and Walkers. Throughout the year, call the main office at 428-2200 if you need to deviate from your child’s normal dismissal plan. Otherwise, no matter what the student tells us, we are required to send them home the way you‘ve indicated on the beginning of the year information sheet. Please try not to change this procedure. It is for your child’s safety and security that only ONE dismissal location is chosen and maintained, especially at the beginning of the year. There are 5 ways your child can go home from school, regardless of how they arrive. Walkers- children who meet their parents or siblings to walk home together. It is for the safety of your child that we ask you to please refrain from staying in the walker pick up area. This area tends to get crowded fairly quickly. Please feel free to enjoy our soccer field and track area. For safety, kindergarten students are not encouraged to walk home without an adult or someone above the age of 10. YMCA- children who attend the after-school childcare program in the cafeteria. Bus- children who ride a school bus home. Please designate the bus number. Daycare- children who ride a daycare bus or van to their facility. Please include the name of the daycare and street location. Car Rider- children whose parents go through the car rider line and remain in their vehicle. It is also necessary to stress how important it is to follow Jollyville’s dismissal procedures. It is for the safety of all students attending our school that if you’re driving a car to pick up your child, please use the car rider line. Please do not park your vehicle to walk up and take your child from the car rider teacher on duty. Kindergarten students are not allowed to leave their duty station until the duty teacher dismisses them. For the first week of school, your child will be sent home with a tag that indicates how he/she gets home. Please send your student back to school each day of this week wearing this tag.
Discipline: At Jollyville Elementary, we believe in “S.T.A.R.R. Behavior”. Students are positively praised for their efforts to show the following traits: S - use Self control T – Try my best A – Actively listen R – be Respectful R – be Responsible. Students who consistently show STARR behavior have the opportunity to earn a “Jaguar Pride” note to the office, which is the highest honor in our school. The office will call you to celebrate this honor and you will be invited to the Jaguar Pride Assembly at the end of the 9 weeks. We also participate in the campus-wide "STARRbuck" system, where students can collect STARRbucks to purchase prizes in the classroom or school office. In kindergarten, we monitor our behavior with a color system. All children start the day on GREEN. Each time the teacher notices a child showing a positive trait, they have the opportunity to move up to PURPLE (according to your teacher’s color system). If students stay on GREEN or PURPLE, they earn a peg at the end of the day. Once 10 pegs have been earned, your child will have the opportunity to visit the treasure chest. However, misbehavior can cause a child to move down levels. The first is YELLOW, which indicates a warning and a chance to correct their behavior. ORANGE is time to sit for five minutes and think about appropriate behavior and a note is sent home. RED means it is time to talk to parents and the child sits in time-out. Notes sent home must be read, signed and sent back to the teacher the following day. If you have questions about the incident, or notice a reoccurring problem, please contact your teacher to schedule an appropriate time for discussion.
Dressing for School: Please dress your child in comfortable clothing for school. It is best to dress children in “play” clothes instead of “dress” clothes since some activities require children to paint, sit on the floor, work with sand, water, shaving cream, and glue or play outside. In cold weather, please dress your child accordingly since we may go outside to play or for a short walk on the school grounds. Because we do many physical activities during the day, such as a required two lap run before recess, it is recommended that children do not wear clogs, flip-flops, or sandals to school. Two to three times a week, we have P.E. days and children must wear tennis shoes to school to participate effectively. Check your teacher’s schedule.
E- Entering the building: During the school day, visitors may enter the building at the front doors only. This is for the safety of the children, as you are required to sign-in at the office to get a visitor’s badge. While we encourage parent volunteers and visits, please have courtesy and make sure your child’s teacher is aware of your purpose and when you are coming up to school. Our schedules can change often, depending on special events, meetings or required safety drills. We want to make the most of your visit! If you do come up to the classroom and we’re not there, check the “Where Are We” poster on the classroom door.

As children begin to bring home these early readers, it is important to understand how they learn to read. "Easy" books for children provide them with important practice using 1:1 correspondence, decoding skills and gives them a feeling of success which generates a desire to read more books. As the experts say, "Practice makes perfect", so encourage and praise your child for reading their mini-books time and time again. Your child’s teacher may send home blank worksheets, activities or assignments. Please complete the work and send it back.
Hours of school: The campus is open from 7:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students are learning in the classroom between 7:40-2:40 every day. Children who enter the room after the bell rings at 7:40 are considered tardy. Students who enter after 9:00 are required to have a parent sign them in at the office.

V- Volunteers: The best way to help our school is to join the PTA. However, our classroom has special needs too. Please contact the teacher if you would like to be our room parent, assist with parties, field trips or classroom work. Please make sure to sign up as a volunteer through our PTA website. This is a must and needs to be done before you can volunteer in the classroom. You can do this in the computer lab on Back-to-School or Academic Night.
W- Webpage: For the most up-to-date information, fun and educational links or policy information, visit our school’s website at: http://jollyville.roundrockisd.org/
Water: Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle labeled with their name to school. Our classroom has a water fountain for easy access during class times. Disposable bottles will be thrown away, and washable bottles will be sent home daily.
X- eXtra Clothes: In the event of an accident, a spill or other instance, it is helpful if the children keep a set of extra clothing in their backpack. These will be sent home as used. If your child borrows a set of clothing from the nurse, please wash and return them as soon as possible. If you have gently used pants, shorts, socks, underwear or shoes in 4-6 year old sizes, please consider donating them to our nurse's office at the end of the year as well to help replenish her emergency clothing.
